Lives Illuminated by Coconut Oil

Updated: Sep 10, 2023

"This factory will greatly benefit the community because we have people who will be employed here, and others can bring their coconuts to sell and earn good money."- Emmanual, local agriculturist

Rivercess County in Liberia has undergone a significant transformation with the establishment of a new coconut oil factory, thanks to the ambition of the local communities and the generosity of Universal Outreach donors. This remarkable endeavour has breathed fresh life into an area desperately in need of additional income sources.

I had the opportunity to talk with Kent Bubbs Jr and Eric Saye, the Coconut Oil Program manager at UOF. They visited Rivercess in June 2023 to train a community on the cold-pressed oil extraction technique and to witness the outcome of the factory construction.

"The roads were rough, but not as rough as they are likely to become when the heavy rains start," Eric Saye reported. Kent Bubbs added, "This underscores the importance of transporting high-value goods like coconut oil instead of coconuts, which maximized income for the farmers."

The impact of the factory on Rivercess County has been multifaceted. Most importantly, it has provided a much-needed economic boost by creating new employment opportunities for local residents and reducing the risk of sending raw coconuts to Monrovia. Additionally, the factory has empowered local coconut farmers by offering them a stable market for their produce, encouraging them to plant more coconut trees and enhancing the region's agricultural sustainability.

But the benefits don't end there. Coconut oil, often called "liquid gold," is celebrated for its numerous health advantages, being rich in healthy fats, antioxidants, and antimicrobial properties.

"The factory looks very fine. The people took great care in building it, which reflects their appreciation for the positive impact it will have on their lives," noted Eric.

Local agriculturalist and manager of the coconut oil factory, Emmanuel, stated, "This factory will greatly benefit the community because we have people who will be employed here, and others can bring their coconuts to sell and earn good money."

The Universal Outreach Community's dedication to uplifting Rivercess County has not only spurred economic growth but has also improved the health and well-being of its residents. The coconut oil factory is a shining example of how sustainable initiatives can bring about enduring positive change in underserved communities."
